Taken from the Spanish for
"field," the wide valley of Campo is a remote and sparsely developed
community that was once known as New Texas because so many Texans tried
to make a go of ranching here. Population today is around 1100, with
ranch-style homes spread out across the plain. Land here is of plenty.
The Pacific Southwest Railway
Museum pays tribute to the original rail line that once ran east through
Arizona. Campo features several
restaurants, markets, a malt shop,
four
community centers, and Cuyamaca College in nearby El Cajon. Mountain
Empire Unified School District serves Jacumba, Descanso, Pine Valley,
Tecate, Campo, and Potrero; all are areas of San Diego’s East County.
